What is Letterboxd? Letterboxd for iOS is a social network app for film lovers that allows users to log films, browse popular and highly rated films, view film info, read and comment on reviews and lists, create and edit lists, follow members, filter and sort collections of films, and search for films, content, and people. The app offers account upgrades to Letterboxd Pro or Patron, which provide additional features such as annual and all-time stats pages, advanced activity and streaming service filters, list cloning, profile backdrops, listing on the Patrons page, and early access to new features.

✔ Pros:

- The app allows users to keep track of movies they have watched and create collections using tags.

- The community experience within the app is enjoyable, with users being able to read reviews from fellow users.

☹ Cons:

- The app has a multitude of issues, such as crashing frequently and not loading properly.

- Users are unable to delete comments on their own reviews without blocking the user who made the comment.

- The app has a lot of bugs that have not been addressed, making it a frustrating experience for users.

why so buggy?

don’t get me wrong, this is a great website and service but I’m getting increasingly frustrated by how many bugs there are that don’t seem to have been addressed in the year that I’ve been using this app. I’m using the newest iPhone and the latest update of the app and would expect it to be a relatively smooth experience, but I find that several different bugs make it frustrating or even impossible to use. like some other reviewers have noted, I get logged out (or rather, told that there’s an error and I need to log out) and then only with difficulty manage to log back in; often in tapping on a film or review or user profile, the orange bar appears saying “Error loading [film/ user/film relationship/review]—something has gone wrong. Please try again later.” sometimes it still loads but with information missing (like user reviews), sometimes it doesn’t load at all, sometimes I can manage to get it to load by going back a few pages and retracing my steps and trying again, and sometimes it even crashes the app (which has been happening a lot today and has prompted the writing of this review). my point is that the only consistency is this inconsistency and it makes using the app a frustrating experience (the three haptic buzzes that these errors come with only makes it more aggravating). not sure if it’s a server problem or something or if it’s a buggy app but I would appreciate it if these many problems are addressed in a future update.

I find myself using this app every day. Whether it’s logging what I’m watching, or reading other reviews from fellow users, I love the community experience within the app. However, the app itself has a multitude of issues that I’ve come across throughout my two years with this app. 1. Users should be able to delete not only their own comments, but others comments on their own reviews. I shouldn’t have to block a user just to remove one of their comments on my post. Also, occasionally I’ll come across some old comments of my own, and my opinion shifts over time, and I would love the option to either edit or delete my own comments at any time. This is easily my biggest gripe with the platform. 2. The app updates. With every problem fixed, a new one arises. At the time of me writing this, the new version of the application won’t even let me posts comments or edit my reviews. Hopefully this gets resolved soon, because today I’ve been using the website itself and not the iOS app. This is only one example, multiple issues tend to arrive (but also get resolved quickly) with each new update. 3. I’d love to be able to choose my profile picture through the website / app itself, and not have to link my Twitter / Gravatar. There’s plenty of minor stuff too, but I won’t go on for longer. I have the pro membership and I love the site, but if these changes are made, this app could easily be an incredible platform.
Needs to be fixed

This app is my go to app for logging and keeping track of films. I watch movies all the time and I rarely open my IMDb app anymore since discovering this app because it’s much nicer to navigate and it’s more useful and reliable to form opinions about new releases and if I’m going to see them vs an IMDb rating alone, the user reviews on IMDb were always unreliable and now I can see what my friends are watching and their thoughts on films. I discover new ones all the time. That being said, this app either doesn’t load most of the time or crashes every single day. I’m rarely able to even search for Movies anymore, update my lists or make new ones, or log films without being told there’s an error or an issue. Nothing gets saved. So in short, the app is full of bugs that updates never, ever fix. I’m not sure why these can’t be fixed but it needs to happen because it’s incredibly frustrating. Especially if you are someone who pays to use the app. Thanks.
My only complaint

Sometimes I get logged out of my account for literally no reason. It doesn’t happen as much as it used to, but it’s very annoying when it does happen. Other than that, I love using the app to keep track of all the movies I watch and I love using tags to make collections of movies. I’ll put tags of the actors in movies I know that I watched, so I have a collection of Jennifer Lawrence movies and I know which ones I’ve seen and which ones I still need to watch. I know I probably don’t need this, cause who can’t remember which Jennifer Lawrence movies they’ve seen? But I like to visually see all of the ones I’ve seen together in one place, maybe that’s just me being weird, but it can’t be too weird if it is a feature in the app.
